The weeks after a hip or knee replacement matter. The operation fixes the joint, but the exercises you do afterwards decide how well you walk, climb stairs and get back to normal life. For many older people, getting to a clinic in those first weeks is the hardest part. That is where physiotherapy at home helps.
This article is general information. Always follow the instructions from your surgeon and hospital team.
Why physio at home makes sense
- No travel. Getting in and out of a car can be painful and tiring soon after surgery.
- Real-life practice. Your physiotherapist works with your own stairs, bed, chairs and bathroom.
- Safety checks. They can spot trip hazards and suggest equipment while they are there.
- Consistency. Regular visits make it easier to keep going with exercises.
What a home physio visit involves
A physiotherapist will usually:
- Read your hospital discharge instructions and any surgeon’s restrictions.
- Check movement, strength, swelling and walking.
- Set exercises suited to your stage of recovery.
- Practise safe ways to get in and out of bed, chairs, the shower and the car.
- Progress your exercises over the following weeks and help you move from a frame to a stick, and then to walking without an aid when safe.
Help around the house during recovery
Physio is only part of recovery. Many people also need short-term help with showering, meals, washing and getting to follow-up appointments. Our post-hospital care covers this practical support, from a few days to several weeks.
An occupational therapist can also arrange equipment such as a shower chair, toilet frame or raised seat.
Plan before you leave hospital
The best time to organise support is before discharge. Ask your discharge planner about physiotherapy after you go home, and contact us early so visits can start soon after you arrive. Our guide to coming home from hospital explains what to arrange.
How it is funded
In-home physiotherapy can be paid privately, or funded through Support at Home (delivered through our registered partner provider) or the NDIS. If you have a Chronic Condition Management Plan from your GP, physiotherapy and occupational therapy visits can both be claimed through Medicare, up to the yearly number of sessions Medicare allows. Private health insurance may also cover part of the cost, depending on your policy.
