Under the NDIS, you choose who delivers your supports, and you can change providers if they are not working for you. This guide covers what to look for when choosing a provider, and how to switch without a gap in support.
What to look for in a provider
- Registration status. If your plan is agency-managed, you need a registered NDIS provider. Plan-managed and self-managed participants have more choice. Check your plan or ask your support coordinator.
- The right services. Make sure they offer the supports in your plan, such as personal care, community participation or Supported Independent Living.
- Consistent workers. Ask how they match support workers and what happens when your regular worker is away.
- Clear communication. You should know who to call, and get answers quickly.
- Respect for your choices. Good providers build supports around your goals, culture and routines.
Questions to ask before you sign
- Which support workers would I have, and can I meet them first?
- How much notice do you need to change or cancel a shift?
- How do you handle complaints?
- What is the notice period in the service agreement?
- Can you work alongside my other providers and my support coordinator?
How to switch providers
- Read your current service agreement. Look for the notice period and how to end the agreement.
- Line up your new provider first, so there is no gap in support.
- Give written notice to your current provider, following the agreement.
- Sign a new service agreement with your new provider and agree a start date.
- Tell your support coordinator or plan manager, so bookings and payments are updated.
If you have a support coordinator, they can manage most of these steps with you.
If something has gone wrong
If you are unhappy with a provider, you can raise it with them first. If it is not resolved, the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission handles complaints about NDIS providers.
