Under the NDIS, you choose who delivers your supports, and you can change providers if they are not working for you. This guide covers what to look for when choosing a provider, and how to switch without a gap in support.

What to look for in a provider

  • Registration status. If your plan is agency-managed, you need a registered NDIS provider. Plan-managed and self-managed participants have more choice. Check your plan or ask your support coordinator.
  • The right services. Make sure they offer the supports in your plan, such as personal care, community participation or Supported Independent Living.
  • Consistent workers. Ask how they match support workers and what happens when your regular worker is away.
  • Clear communication. You should know who to call, and get answers quickly.
  • Respect for your choices. Good providers build supports around your goals, culture and routines.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. Which support workers would I have, and can I meet them first?
  2. How much notice do you need to change or cancel a shift?
  3. How do you handle complaints?
  4. What is the notice period in the service agreement?
  5. Can you work alongside my other providers and my support coordinator?

How to switch providers

  1. Read your current service agreement. Look for the notice period and how to end the agreement.
  2. Line up your new provider first, so there is no gap in support.
  3. Give written notice to your current provider, following the agreement.
  4. Sign a new service agreement with your new provider and agree a start date.
  5. Tell your support coordinator or plan manager, so bookings and payments are updated.

If you have a support coordinator, they can manage most of these steps with you.

If something has gone wrong

If you are unhappy with a provider, you can raise it with them first. If it is not resolved, the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission handles complaints about NDIS providers.
